Best Pittsburgh Neighborhoods and Suburbs for Every Lifestyle

Best Pittsburgh Neighborhoods and Suburbs for Every Lifestyle

Pittsburgh is a city of neighborhoods, and the hills, rivers and tunnels make each one feel distinct. The best place for you depends on how you want to live. Here’s how our agents match buyers to communities across Greater Pittsburgh.

If you want to walk everywhere

Shadyside, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, Squirrel Hill and the South Side put restaurants, coffee, groceries and nightlife within a few blocks. Expect rowhouses, older brick single-family homes and condos, plus easy access to Oakland’s universities and hospitals. City residents attend Pittsburgh Public Schools and pay the city’s 3% local earned income tax.

If schools are at the top of your list

Families often start with Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair, Wexford (North Allegheny or Pine-Richland), Fox Chapel and Murrysville (Franklin Regional). These districts are consistently in demand, and homes there tend to move quickly. Always confirm the district by address, because boundaries don’t follow mailing names.

If you want newer construction

Cranberry Township, Warrendale, North Huntingdon and Plum have the most newer subdivisions and townhome communities. Cranberry in particular has grown into a major employment hub with quick access to I-79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

If you want to commute without driving

Mt. Lebanon and Bethel Park sit on the T light rail, which runs straight into Downtown. Edgewood and the East End have busway access. These are some of the easiest car-light commutes in the region.

If you love small-town main streets

The river towns of Sewickley, Oakmont and Verona offer historic homes and walkable business districts. Sewickley is also an easy drive to Pittsburgh International Airport.

If you want the most house for the money

Penn Hills, Forest Hills, North Versailles, West Mifflin and Monroeville offer more square footage per dollar than most of the region, with quick access to the Parkway East or Route 30.

If you want views

Mt. Washington overlooks the Golden Triangle from Grandview Avenue, with the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines connecting you down to the city.
